What code do you live by? I’m sure you have one. I’m certain you believe it’s wrong to harm others, lie, steal, etc. But, what code do you follow to achieve your personal and professional goals. What do you promise yourself and your family? What do you do to ensure you’ll keep those promises?
A Constitution is something you live by. It’s the law of your life. Even when we don’t always live up to each and every standard we still strive to live it. As you contemplate and then write your own personal constitution think about what you strive to be not necessarily what you are today. Similar to goals it most likely will be something you reach UP for.
Answer these key questions?
- If someone close to you were to describe you what would they say?
- What phrases or single words would they use?
- How about a complete stranger? They might have only met you. What would they say about you?
- How would you describe yourself?
- Who are (or were) some of your heroes and role models. Maybe they were people you knew intimately or maybe they were admired from a distance through words they had written generations earlier. As you think of them ask yourself what you admire about them? You might admire many things about them or maybe it’s just one thing. The aspirations we have might come from a combination of attributes from different people. That’s okay.
- Over the years what are some things you have vowed to do (or not do)?
- Consider things you want to changeabout yourself. In many countries (including the creation of the United States), people first had to throw off the old to make room for the new.
Now that you have considered what attributes you would like to incorporate into your life you need to begin the writing process. Sometimes this is the most difficult part. Often when we begin this process we think we have to write like a New York Times best selling author. That’s not true. This is for you. This is something you can reference and use to keep you on track. You can use this to create the life you want to live. You are not trying to win accolades or awards with your writing technique or style. The most important thing is that it means something to you.
So, now that you have some instructions let’s begin writing. Some people will write in paragraph form. Some will write a few sentences and add some bullet points listing out certain qualities they aspire to. Again, this is for you. There is no right or wrong. Just write and get it out on paper (or screen).
You may go through a few drafts and it most likely will evolve over time. Just start today!
